Diana Cards

Diana Cards

Art by Nightmare3711.

Diana Cards is a waitress working at the Burnt Thumbs: Bar and Grill in the Invardium undercity. Burnt Thumbs lies but only one layer below the surface, but its clientel are no less degenerate than those further down. Diana Cards, having fallen on a bad streak of luck, found herself working nights as Burnt Thumbs to make some ends meet. She's found herself in a great deal of debt, most of which she's had dumped onto her by her many exes. She knows better now, but finds it difficult to earn the respect she knows she's owed.

History

Diana was young when her mother left for another man. Diana was left with her father, who wasn't exactly a model citizen. Though he never once laid a hand on Diana, his vitriolic verbal abuse was difficult to tolerate for Diana. In her teenage years, her father remarried a woman who would physically berate Diana on her father's behalf. The pair were vicious, until one day Diana ran away with a man she was secretly dating. Diana never saw her parents again. She wonders if they're even still alive.

Diana Cards has worked for the Burnt Thumbs for about a year now. The work is degrading, but it beats some of the things she's had to do before. The uniform is skimpy, leaving little to the imagination. She's had to undergo a great deal of humiliation, but at least she's not only allowed to dish it back, but encouraged to do so. Should anyone violate a waiter or waitress at the Burnt Thumbs, they're obligated to "give 'em the ol' Burnt Thumbs treatment." Many ask how the bar got its name. Those who offend the staff find out why. It's the main reason Diana can stomach to work there.

Personality

Diana is a no-nonsense sort with little patience for tomfoolery and playing around. She's a busy woman, working from the moment Burnt Thumbs opens to the moment it closes. She's a valued employee and respected by the other staff, but her voice doesn't carry. She feels stuck, caught in a loop of despair and turmoil. She desperately wants to escape, get a real job where she's respected by everyone, not just those she works with. She wants to contribute to society, make it a better place. But her dreams were crushed a long time ago, spat on, and then stomped into the dirt. She wants a better life, but she no longer actively strives for it. All she wants now is to dig herself out of the hole she's found herself in.

Having been screwed over by men all her life, she's given up on love. Nearly every man she's ever given a chance to has wronged her in some way. Be it assault, fighting, stealing her stuff, being verbally abusive, or leaving when things got too serious. She decries men, "vile creatures", "rats, less than rats". Sure, there's the occasional exception, but they're rarer than a flower in mid-winter. Her boss might be the only good man there is, even if he has his downsides. No, good men don't exist.
